MONDAY 4-13-15

 Scorpion:

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS THIS IS TOO MUCH. The synopsis was not lying when it said Walter has "one too many emotional blows"-- last ep, he went to tell Paige how he feels and saw her being happy with Drew, who she hadn't said was back in town. This week, he finds out that Cabe knew about the bombing that was done with his software, and didn't tell him because he didn't want him to stop the mission. Which leads him against Cabe, and then against Paige when she tries to stop him. And then Ralph gets in trouble and almost dies because he told Ralph he's part of the team. And then Paige says she's leaving because she can't keep Ralph in a risky situation and she doesn't want him to turn out like Walter.

And my heart collapsed into a thousand sharp little shards.

AND THEN HE DRIVES OFF A FUCKING CLIFF. This show runs hot on the emotion-scale for a show about people who supposedly don't feel emotions, and it's sort of too much for me. I fear the finale will straight up kill me, and it's more than I can handle.

Not that I'm not going to watch it, because the synopsis says all he wants to do is talk to Paige, and that is not something I'm going to miss.

But damn, this show gets me right in the feels.


NCIS:LA

You know, out of all these characters, Callen isn't really one I worry about or crave watching. That's more for Deeks and Kensi and Eric and Nell and Hetty. Callen is sort of a brick wall. But this episode showed more of his backstory, and how Hetty is basically his mom, saving him from a criminal life and a quick and dirty death. Young!Hetty was strange to see, but also really fun, and I sort of hope we get more of that for her own sake. I want to see a way-far flashback to young Hetty and young Granger as field agents in the and 80s, being badass and maybe building a history that they now don't talk about but haven't ever gotten over.

That's what I want to see.


Gotham:

I don't even know what's going on with this show, really. Fish is off in some other show, being Queen of the Morloks. Penguin is getting all up in everyone's business but is mostly talking to new people. Bruce is getting weird. Jim is getting serious. Harvey is still being unexpectedly the most fun. I'm not super invested in any of the storylines, but I like the show for the characters. Whether or not they have anything in common (yet?) with the characters we know, I like how they interact with each other. And how they're setting stuff up.

Cat killing Reg was unexpected, and Bruce being...conflicted, we'll say, about it was pretty intense. That kid can sell it when he wants to.

I just hope the storylines come back together by the end of the season.


TUESDAY 4-14-15


SHIELD:

Does anyone else feel like it's way too easy for Skye to access these powers that were basically just making things sort of jiggle before and were breaking her bones? Like, I get that she was suppressing them before, but now almost immediately she can make water flow crooked and can move mountains. That seems fast. And now her story is as far away from everyone else's as possible, and I just sort of wonder what it's doing? I like Skye best when she's being May and Coulson's adoptive daughter*, and the longer she's away, the less she had to do with hacking, hacktivism, Coulson, May, Shield, and all the things that were previously the most defined thing about her. Maybe this is just me resisting what's unclear as her character develops, but I miss her on the team.

Which hardly exists anymore. But at least Fitz wants to come hang out with Coulson, and Simmons is using her skill at being two-faced to help Team C, and so on.

I loved the May backstory, but at the same time, I miss her mystery. I mean, there was no way Bahrain was ever going to be as horrible as they made it sound, but they did a really good job of making it resonate as bad as they've been saying. May wanted to have a baby and she didn't because she had to kill a kid, and that's horrible, and I'm sad that it happened to her and I'm sad that I know it. It brings ALL THE FEELS. I hope they're going to let her adopt a power-baby or something, because she needs to heal and I want her to heal, and she needs to just be Skye's mom. Even though Skye found her mom and I don't really care.

But Reina is a precog, though? That's interesting. Now just work her and Skye around to Inhuman besties and we're good.

And now I wonder if they're going to tie into Ultron at all, because shouldn't they have noticed Tony-Bots flying around and developing sentience? Or heard about the Avengers getting overwhelmed and having to do something about it? Or something? This is literally my biggest problem with the show, though--they're tied to the releases of the movies, without really tying into them at all (the tie-in for Thor 2 was literally nothing, not even looking for that ice-monster that was left free in London), and it's crippling the story.


iZombie:

More Ravi! I want all the Ravi all the time always forever. Also, this episode could have used more Clive. But we did get a lot of Liv-and-her-life, which is good too, and a sexy new zombie who was not at that party and looks like King Arthur (which I really hope someone brings up), so there's that. Maybe Liv can be happy and cute for a little while before that goes spectacularly off the rails like all things must when you're hiding things as a plot point.**

And Major! Getting in over his head and being destroyed for it. Maybe literally. I saw a thing on Tumblr with the credits art that had Major on Liv's slab, and that is not something I'm hoping happens. I'm uninterested in Liv and Major getting back together, but Ravi only just moved in with him when he didn't want to move at all, and they have unfinished character business, and he was only trying to do what's right, and I will be very disappointed if that's cut off and handed to Liv when it's his story.

Also? That's a horrible thing for Liv to have to deal with, and for Ravi to have to deal with, and it was way super-sudden and jarring.



WEDNESDAY 4-15-15

Arrow:
With Doug Jones! Mostly this episode felt like fluff, but the way this story is going, I liked fluff better than all the plot, so there's that, and there's a lot of set-up involved here:

  • Metahumans who were not involved in the reactor explosion, which seems super important even though that wasn't even main characters who were talking about that.
  • Atom getting to be a hero, even if it did have to be with Ollie remote-controlling the suit, and the relations between grim ol broody-pants and happy-go-lucky-and-unappreciated-pants evening out some. That high five was priceless.
  • Ray seeing how Felicity still loves Ollie--and I hope he breaks up with her over it, because he needs to catch a break himself.
  • Doug Jones. He's a plus in and of himself.
  • THEA WHAT NO! Don't be a plot point!
  • Lance not being a rage-fueled dick, but trying to help Roy...who then fakes his death because without Thea he has no story? I don't know, I hope he comes back.
And next week looks like it's time for sexytimes!



THURSDAY 4-16-15

Bones:

No baby this week, but the ads say she finds out next week and they aren't even being coy about it, so that's great. No word on Mr Viziri, but we get the return of Wendel and his nurse-girlfriend and the return of hapless Hadgins because of it! But the better things go between them, the more I worry about her.

Bones's dad us still shifty as all fuck, but he brings back a ring that Bones lost because someone was threatening the family, and that's why her dad left to begin with, so that's okay? I guess? I don't know, her daddy issues are getting very ambiguous and I'm super-unsure how to feel about them anymore. But props to Booth for actually bugging his car with a GPS tracker, because that's totally in character and is awesome.

I still like Aubrey. He's so young but so sassy.


Elementary:

Not ghosts, terrorists. But I really wanted it to be ghosts--or at least for them to start entertaining the idea that it actually is ghosts, just long enough for Joan to have to question what she thinks happens to dead people, and her and Sherlock to have a convo that makes her deal with Andrew's death.*** Which is probably too much to ask, since this is a slow-character-development classic CBS show. Le sigh.

Other than that, I don't really have a whole lot to say about this episode. The ones that are just cases are less interesting to me, though I do like that Gregson basically admitted that he cares about Joan and her wellbeing--and, probably, Sherlock, too--and that he doesn't like how shifty and bitchy his daughter turned out.


FRIDAY 4-17-15

I missed The Messangers, and it hasn't popped up on On Demand, so there's that. I'm gonna try to catch it next week.

First week without 12 Monkeys and I crey.


SATURDAY 4-18-15

She chose him! I mean, it's a love story, so she has to choose him, and she can't go back before the end of the season or things will get overly complicated, but she chose him. And she took all day to do it, so we know she means it when she does! Jamie and Claire are such a shining example of Ideal Love that I can't even. He believed her crazy story about being from the future because it was her who said it and he knows her heart. He saved her from being burned at the stake. He's taking her home to Lallybroch, despite the fact that almost everything that happened to her this episode happened because of Baby Girlfriend and her jealous lunacy--or because of it.

Ughghghghg, so love, much feels, very dream.

And Gaillis! From 1969! She's a hippie who fell through time! That is great, and even though I sort of thought that's what was going on (I think because of the questions she was asking, not because of the book, because I read it so long ago I don't even remember if I got that far). Does she die? She's a bitch and a smug one and should have known better, but she's much more interesting than stupid old Baby Girlfriend.



Orphan Black:

Yay Clones! I dropped out of this show sometime in Season 1, for whatever reason--I think it was opposite something else we were watching--and never got back to Season 2, but the whole day before the Season 3 premier, I watched the marathon, and I'm mostly caught up. It's such a rollercoaster, this show, and I'm so happy to be watching it live!

And we got so much in this one episode:

  • Helena in a box, hallucinating or dreaming about a super-happy babyshower and then talking to scorpions!
  • Crazy boy-Clones and their violent mustachioed brothers!
  • Cophine breaking up because Delphine is probably the new Rachel and turning terrible, and Rachel is worse than we knew, trying to kill everyone with the help of her Cleaner, who she'd been sleeping with!
  • Rachel now somewhat braindamaged?
  • Sarah in holding, and then out of holding and then inpersonating Rachel and being impersonated by Alison!
  • Everyone being tangled up in their own lives!
  • A new Clone who has blonde hair and wears skimpy dresses and makes out with boy-Clones in elevators!
I don't even remember it all--I know I'm missing things--but it's so complex and wonderful and why isn't Tatiana Maslany winning every award ever? Oh, right, genre snobbery. Can't wait for next week!



SUNDAY 4-19-15

We have no Sunday shows anymore. Unless I start tweeting Naked and Afraid. Which I might.

  • StarTalk! Neil deGrasse Tyson's new late-night science TV show! Starting on 4-20 when seems like less of a coincidence than it could be.
  • Lip Synch Battle if I catch it live and tweet it.
  • Time Traveling with Brian Unger, if I manage to catch it, because I love him.
  • The Daytime Emmys?
I wish I had HBO so I could be watching Game of Thrones, but I'm so very behind on that show, what with NOT having HBO.



NOTES:
*Or possibly Coulson's May-December love interest, which I think would be awesome if they gave it as little comment as they gave to May and Ward's age-gap. But I think more and more that this is a pipe dream, and the more fatherly they make him, the more icky this possibility gets. And the more sad I get. Remember when you could ship anyone on this show with anyone else?
**Maybe Ravi will get jealous of King Arthur and there can be cuteness there, and the mixed messages of him wanting Liv back to himself, but also wanting to study more zombies so he can cure Liv. Yeah, I think I ship those two.
***And if it happens to push them into a more emotionally close relationship, that would be okay, too. Because we all know Sherlock's favorite way to release stress.

MONDAY 4-6-15

Nothing at all because my whole life was preempted by sports and we watched like three old movies on Netflix because no one else wanted to watch Nikita starting half way through the first season where I am.


TUESDAY 4-7-15

The Flash: Rerun

Agents of Shield

Let's talk about: How I don't care at all about the division over which Shield is Shield, because there is literally no one to care about on the other side? I care about Team Coulson, and about Coulson keeping his family together, and about him, personally, figuring out a better way for Shield to work. I have nothing to hang any caring on for the other side, and since Bobbi looks like she's coming back toward this side, and Mac is being so paranoid he's ruined what I liked best about him--his reliable dependability--I'm just over it all.

But I do love Coulson being a badass, I love Mike joining the team and them stealing a jet, and I love them going on the offensive, finally, because really. They've been sitting back and waiting, and the world must be going to shit without Shield out there arriving before anyone knows there's a problem, and it annoys me that there's this wall around the show. Like, come on. Why isn't there more talk of what Tony is doing to pick up the slack? Why isn't there more mention of stuff going down in various cities (specifically, now, Hells Kitchen in NY, since Daredevil has been released, though it wasn't at the end of this episode).

I love these characters, and even though the show is much better than how it started, it's still hemmed in in weird ways, and I feel like it's wings are clipped. It's so frustrating.


iZombie

Lets talk about: I know Kung Fu! Old reference, but a perfect one, and she was kicking people's butts and it was awesome. And the Clive storyline was brilliant--she thought he was a bad cop, and he was genuinely upset that she would just think something like that because he hates his undercover past, and they end back on that flirty, sassy tone we all love--but more affectionately and hopefully closer and more friendly because of this growing trust. I love the Liv-Clive partnership so much.

And! Major and Ravi are roommates! Even if it's just for Major to get closer to Liv again, and even if it's just a plot device to make those two people more a part of her actual life, it's amazing, and I love how they were just instant friends. It was like a meet-cute (Meat Cute?) when they were talking about moving in together under false meeting-pretenses.

Also, Blaine? He's got crazy plans, and I can't wait for that rich-Zombie-gourmet-brain racket to just go bonkers.


NCIS

Lets talk about: How I have less and less to actually say about this show? Like, I still like it, I still watch it, but even liveblogging, I don't have much of actual comment? I might give up keeping it in this post...

But who else is really nervous about Tony's dad living so close?

Forever

Let's talk about: How Jo didn't go to Paris with her super rich but also super pushy new boyfriend because SHE WANTED TO GO WITH HENRY! Henry who's advice was to get lost in the city at the first chance and wander around until you find it naturally and honestly and really live it! AND THAT SHE WENT TO TELL HIM! And then Abe showed up with the news that HE'D FOUND ABIGAIL. Because OF COURSE HE DID. With the help of Lucas, who Henry doesn't know was involved at all. And who has horrible timing and news that trumps an almost-confession that I hope makes them shy and flirty and awkward for at least one whole episode!


WEDNESDAY 4-8-15

Arrow: Rerun of not even an old episode, which really annoys me.


THURSDAY 4-9-15

Bones

Lets talk about: Mr Viziri! And his brother I'd forgotten (or didn't know?) he had, trapped in Iran. I'm almost definite that this means he'll be arrested and then Booth or someone will have to go in and get him or whatever, which feels contrived OR that it means they were looking for a way to get him off the show that would be very emotional--but that option pisses me off, because it means all of Cam's relationships end tragically when everyone else on the show including her daughter we hardly see has been given happy relationships.

And is that a new creepy killer? We haven't had one of those in ages.

Backstrom

Lets talk about: Emotional development! Backstrom is still a terrible person, but this episode and last episode brought a lot of tragedy to the WHY he's a horrible person, and even though he goes about learning his lessons in all the wrong way every time, there's still this feeling that he actually IS learning them. He defended Valentine last ep, he actually, honestly cried this ep. He's making progress, and it's a very realistic, messy, painful sort of progress I don't think I've seen on a regular middle-of-primetime, not-very-serious show before.

And I love his team so much. I love how Niedermeyer knows everything but no one listens, and how he's just sort of a sad puppy about that fact, not pissy and mean. I love how Paquet makes the weirdest interactive-art-installation murder boards. I love Gravley's youngness, and how that doesn't damage her ability to do her job at all. I love Almond's self-possession, style, and vaguely flirty everything. And Moto! Moto did, like, all the legwork this episode, and followed hunches and did his research. It was amazing.

Elementary

Lets talk about: How I STILL think this whole season is the story of how Holmes and Watson finally fell in love. Like, it's CBS and it's emotionally weird people, so I'm not holding my breath, and I'd be okay if they just confirm a deeply codependent friendship that isn't at all sexual because that never happens--but come on. That whole definition of friendship conversation? That was Holmes being emotionally open, honest, and basically saying "you're the best part of me and I want to be more like you, not you more like me, and I'm super worried about you". With an implied "do you want a hug because I kind of do". It's the closest we've gotten to anything truly love-like from him since he was trying to tell if that AI was actually sentient, and it was a lot more true and real than that philosophical talk.

Also? If the writers keep the Holmes-Watson story totally platonic, they'll be wasting the only adaptation of the series where Holmes and Watson being in love won't threaten people who worry about two dudes being in love. And why even bother genderswitching when everyone knows that the two of them are in love anyway?



FRIDAY 4-10-15

12 Monkeys
Let's talk about: OH MY GOD IT'S THE LAST EPISODE UNTIL NEXT JANUARY EVEN THOUGH THEY STARTED PRODUCTION THIS PAST MONDAY!!! And how it's also the last day of the 12 Monkeys Theme Week, which really made the week fly by in a haze of feels and anticipation, but also made the finale so much harder to handle because now that's over toooooooo.

But for real, lets talk about:
  • Mr Dr Jones was in charge of the Splinter Project, but it was Mrs Dr Jones's serum, so what did he have to do to get that? And is she already signed up with Spearhead? I mean, she had to not be there so she wouldn't know that Cassie was coming through, but where is she instead?
  • CASSIE IS IN THE FUTURE. With a gut shot, no immunity (unless not being immune to the early strains doesn't mean you're not immune to the later, you just normally would have been dead already), and everything going to hell around her.
  • What is up with those Ghost Soldiers? Are they the Army of the 12 Monkeys? Are they really those babies, because they look older than 28 years, and if they ARE those babies, how pissed are they going to be that Cassie appearing is not in the Plan they've been raised for?
  • Aaron Marker is a tool, and that scene where they were interrogating him was hard to watch and brilliantly done--Cole really didn't want to do all that, and I think it was because Cassie was watching, but she's the one who told him to keep going--she's getting hard, and it's scary! And then he burned "to death" (in quotes because no body, no proof and he could still come back), and she wanted to save him, even after all that, and cried for him. So much emotional complexity going on there.
  • And the Red Forest vision? Until that point, she was dedicated, but not cruel, and she always listened to Cole's advice--but afterward, she comes out, apparently not having been affected at all, although we have seen her losing hope and stuff when the red plants are around before, and that thread is still dangling about what they did to her, and she comes out and shoots Ramse. She's the one who saves people, not the one who shoots people, and that's scary too.
  • How much time passed between hand-holding in the snow and waking up in bed?
  • Why didn't they kiss when he thought he was sending her to her death? He knows exactly what splintering does to you, she's already bled a lot, and he has no way of knowing if she'll make it or if Jones can actually help her, so as far as he knows, it's probably just a doing-something-desperate sort of death rather than a doing-nothing-and-letting-her-die-in-his-arms-again sort of death. He refused to say goodbye, but he could have still kissed her.
    • And we're just going to assume that "see you soon" now has exactly the same meaning as "as you wish" now, right?
  • Ramse is not the Witness and was so weirded out that they thought he was! And when he saw that Cole had to choose between him and Cassie, he told him to save Cassie--even though saving her took his whole plan and threw it away, as far as he was concerned! It took him 28 years to come around, and Cole being alive gave him that final push, and then Cole came back and changed everything.
    • Which makes me SO HAPPY, because I've been getting frustrated with how nothing changes, and without Ramse pre-knowing, there was NO REASON for things to keep going badly.
    • Also, I was a little sad that he didn't go back to 2043 to get Cassie, but I know he really can't anymore, and I'm very very happy that he and Ramse are on the same side again--or at least getting there.
  • Olivia is going to be SO PISSED when she finds out that Seki / Ramse didn't die, that Cole did not run off into obscurity, that she should have found out what happened to Dr Railly, and now because of it, Cole has access to everything Ramse knows (assuming they stop fighting and fucking compare notes, because everyone has different pieces to this puzzle), and Cassie now has access to whatever they know in the future--and can fill gaps there, too--and those Ghost Soldiers have no idea what's going on... It's gonna be epic.
  • Deacon is so confused and I love it.
  • Whitley and Adler survived! And there was so much sad-affection (sadfection?) between Whitley and Jones I almost died. I love those two so much. I want them to be in a cross-generational interracial love story, but I will settle for Jones, who didn't want to be a mom, just taking in all the strays.
  • How is Jones going to convince the Soldiers to let her save Cassie? How is Cassie going to adapt to a mostly abandoned facility under hostile command? Will they give her Cole's old room? Because I need that.
  • How long before we get reunions in the new season?
  • How hard will Cole try to get back to her / get her back? Will the machine return her to 2015 the way it returned him to 2043 eventually, or will it be a different sort of trip because she was sent from the machine to itself?
  • Jenniferrrrrr! She's still in charge of Markridge and it looks like everyone has basically forgotten about her as soon as she told them that she'd told Cole where to go--which was awful and which she didn't look happy about but did anyway, so what did they do to her to make her do it? She hates Cassie. She has 12 cases on her personal plane, but it's 2 years early. She wants to return the world to the animals because people are awful. She sent Ramse back to "undo what I've done" as well as whatever Cole and whoever else did. What is she doing?
Oh my god, I have no words. Well, I have a lot of words, and I'll be writing all sorts of fic to fill the gap, but I have no  idea what's going to happen next, and it's glorious, and I don't want to wait so long!


SATURDAY 4-11-15

Outlander

Let's talk about: How the only good women in the past are Claire, who is headstrong and not very subtle, and Mrs Fitz who is hardly ever there. Gaillies is the least subtle person ever, flouncing around like she's untouchable, being all witchy in a really superstitious time and place, and now she's gotten Claire arrested. And Laoghrie, she's just a horrible brat. And everyone else is a dude.

I love Jamie and Claire together, but now it seems we're in the part of the season where everything is going to crap, and it bruises my heart!

SNL: Taraji P Henson and Mumford and Sons

Let's talk about: How Taraji is amazing. That is all.

Monday - March 30 

Scorpion

Let's talk about: How everyone on the show is in love and none of them can get a break?? Toby and Happy actually had a date and Toby self-sabotaged and now Happy is convinced she's never going to trust him again and Toby is convinced she's going to be mad at him forever--but he won't give up anyway. Oh, my heart.

And in the meantime, Walter finally went to do something about his feelings for Paige, he actually ran out of there to get to her faster, and when he did, Drew was already there and they looked like a perfect family, and now Walter is going to clam up again and never let anyone in. He's totally useless dealing with emotions--to the point where I'm pretty sure that while it's obvious to us and to Toby, it's not obvious to anyone else. Cabe maybe has an inkling, but the way he said "I hope you get to experience that one day" about love, it doesn't sound like it. And Toby knows that Paige has feelings for him but has failed to mention that she's repressing, denying and pushing them asside--because I'm about 89% sure that she doesn't have more than a basic inkling of how deeply Walter feels for her. She sees the best in people, but she also takes them at face value. Walter says he has no feelings and doesn't believe in love, and she believes him, no matter what the little voice in her head says.

It's an emotional disaster, and if the team breaks up at the finale, it'll be because of that fact, I tells ya.

Castle

Let's talk about: The talent show! Ryan and Espo dancing to Daft Punk and killing it! Castle and Beckett dancing and singing in the shower! Becks getting all stage-fright-y and worrying that she won't be able to command a whole station if everyone has seen her failing to sing in the talent show! I don't even remember the case, because the Teamwork was so very very sweet.

NCIS:LA

Lets talk about: Shipping, Because apparently I'm a walking Shipping News this week. Erik was like a crazy puppy about Blaze, and Nell was Not Pleased! She was so not pleased that she kept making horrible faces and it was amazing. Even better, by the end of the episode, Erik knew that there was something Not Right, and he assured her it was nothing--which implies that he thinks he owes her an explanation--which implies I'm dying of feels--and then apologizes to her when things go poorly afterward! (and lets talk about how Blaze wanted him to be friends with her dad, not her!)

It's odd that Hetty would have called in another nerd when she has two, but it was so much fun to watch it play out. And Hetty is always enigmatic, so.

Gotham: Stillll reruuuuunnnnns

I still miss Sleepy Hollow.


Tuesday - March 31

The Flash

Lets talk about: How Welles is evil, but it's not really Welles?? And it's not Eddie, either--he was a red herring. So Eobard somehow fell backwards through time fighting the Flash--and was it him who saved the babyBarry? So why was he there? 

And then he takes over Welles's life because Welles was taking too long inventing world-changing technology, and be becomes Welles. So now, we have this Eobard who Barry hasn't met yet, so who hasn't yet gone back to become Welles, but we also have the Welles he becomes, so at some point in the future, we're going to have Eobard and who Eobard becomes in the same space and...Well, I don't know what to make of him at all now.

Is he pure evil or has living here in the past loosened him up by giving him friends and allies he didn't have before? Did he really regret killing Cisco in that aborted version of reality, or did he just say that because he's used to being Welles? The Welles that was replaced--what did he do with the body, and are we 100% sure that he was dead? (since this is a comic-book-logic world, I would not at all be surprised if he comes back--also, like, they need a mentor, and who's better to replace Welles than Welles?)

IZombie

Lets talk about: How tragic this all is. Liv is still thinking of herself as dead, but she's still here, watching everyone move on without her--Major, especially, this week. And there's a little snippet of the idea that a sociopath's brain could be like a drug, numbing the emotional pain caused by her maintaining her humanity--it's a complex issue, and I hope they come back to it a little before the end of the season. Not too much, but enough that we see her really make the choice to stay human and feeling. 

And lets talk about Ravi. Dear, sweet Ravi who thinks he can cure her and doesn't doubt it for a second. Who wants to help Marcy and is upset when it doesn't work. And who runs away from dangerous-Marcy but stands up to dangerous-Liv and talks her down and reminds her that she's human and gives her a change of clothes. Ravi. I feel the shipping yards building a glorious ship around him.

Things to keep an eye on:
  • Major getting involved in that underworld of new zombies that Blaine is creating
  • Babineaux starting to get a little edgy about whether he believes Liv or not


Agents of SHIELD

Let's talk about: SSSKKKYYYYEEEE. What is going on with your storyline? I'm so happy that she's getting a chance to actually use her powers, that they're actually impressive, and that she's found people who know what to do about them, but I still feel like all of this is way early to set up for The Inhumans. I don't like how Coulson shuffled her off--though the fact that he did it into one of Banner's safehouses was cool, and the fact that he recognized that it was the wrong idea (maybe that was last week?) is still very reassuring. I hope if the team splits up along Shield1 and Shield2 lines, Fitz and Skye are on the same side.

Which brings us to: What even is going on with Shield? Like, I watch this show because I love this team, not because I love Shield, and so far, I don't see a whole lot of difference between Gonzales-Shield and Coulson-Shield, except that Gozales has these four other people helping him run it and Coulson is suffering on his own? And Coulson is, like, more inside of what they're dealing with now?

I'm hoping that they switch set-ups. Coulson could use help running the place, and I feel like he already runs his team more democratically that Shield-standard anyway; meanwhile, Gonzales is really bigoted, and that leads to less of a real democracy, since he really seems to believe that if you're not 100% human, you need to GTFO. He's going to be on the side of Registration, I just know it. And here's my take: Secrets were definitely a problem for OldShield--but so was Hydra, and Gonzales discounting that lets them back in, which is stupid. And as the world changes--as it already has changed--you have to use what you have to fight back, and Gonzales wants to exclude all the heroes and powers and alien tech that they're going to need to fight the villains and powers and alien tech thrown at them. Which is stupid.

Other thoughts:
  • When will they run into the fact that all those Stark-bots that become Ultron are running around doing their job because Tony thinks Fury and Coulson are dead and Shield is gone?


Forever

Let's talk about: How Jo was a teenaged punk! And now I really want to see that. Maybe fan-artists (cough - Cara McGee - cough) will draw awesome pics showing what that was like!

And lets talk about: How I like Cuba Gooding Jr, but I don't like his character? Like, he's too much. He's rich and cool and smart AND he's alpha-dogging all over and making Jo all girly and shy? Nah. I don't like it. I hope that significant-looking glance between her and Henry in the preview is a real one, and not just editing.

And about: How Henry doesn't know what happened to Abigail. And how it almost destroyed him to lose her. And how Abe has been secretly looking for her after he intervened to get Henry functioning again. All of that is a big deal, and I hope it comes up as part of the finale, because I haven't heard that this is renewed yet and it'll make me sad if we never see what comes of that.


NCIS: Didn't Liveblog, but the best part was when Tony and Bishop went under cover and Gibbs looked like he wanted to jump out a window.


Wednesday - April 1

Arrow

Let's talk about: How I'm still super-tired of the whole Ra's storyline. Like, I'm done, dudes. I just don't care anymore. But it did lead to some fun stuff with the criminally-underused Det Lance, and it seems from that explosive preview that it causes a lot of movement on all fronts starting soon, so maybe it'll be worth it. Right now, it's dumb, it's repetitive, and it's not going anywhere--except forcing Ollie to be honest for once in his damned life. Which is a lesson he really does need to learn.

I don't even remember what happens in this ep anymore because I've seen the preview so many times now. That's what I'm looking forward to!


Thursday - April 2

Bones

Lets talk about: Breaking the fourth wall right. When Bones on the show joined Twitter, so did an actual Temperance Brennan Twitter account appear! And as the characters talked about things and posted pictures on the show, so did those posts show up on that account! It's brilliant. Bones was livetweeting her own show, and David Boreanaz was commenting on stuff posted there, and it was amazing. That's who you meta your fiction! I hope they keep up the tweeting through the rest of the show's run--and continue to use it to post eastereggs and special feature stuff, too. And sometimes post actual anthropological articles, because that'd be cool.

How long before they admit that EmsDash is pregnant again?

Backstrom

Let's talk about: Small fandoms. Not too many people liveteweet this show, but the writers room AND the official show account tweet, so there's a pretty good amount of replies and actual conversation with the people who actually make the show and that's great. Plus, the show is finding it's feet, getting in with the feels, and this ep brought up a whole bunch of feels for ol Backstrom to deal with. Him being high on a handful of pills, threatening a massive gangster with the help of his favorite beat cop, is probably the most powerful scene I've seen yet. And I'm just falling in love with this team of weirdos that probably don't work great in normal teams, but do fantastically well in this one.

Elementary

Let's talk about: How more and more I feel like this whole season is a really slow seduction of Watson that he might not even be aware that he's doing? I just can't shake all that talk from before about how she'll never be happy in a traditional relationship, and how he keeps not having traditional relationships, and it seems too convenient to mean nothing.

Also: When ladyface wanted his help making a baby, he was severely freaked out before he knew she was being paid off by his Mysterious Father. He didn't want to curse anyone else with living with his talents. Oh, my heart. He's like Banner when he's not the Hulk, he's a raw nerve. I hope Watson can be a bit of a buffer for him...


Friday - April 3

12 Monkeys

Let's talk about: Second to last episoddddeeeeee! And how I've continued talking about this one all through saturday, mostly off the tag bc of space issues on Tweets, but I can't seem to not think about it? This one changed everything again! It's bonkers. Everything since the middle of the season could have been a season ender.

This week we got:
  • BabyCole and Papa Cole--a cure for his temporal-genetic deterioration by way of creating a paradox inside himself with BabyCole's blood; an explanation of the milk-bullet-shady person visions he's been having, that I'm taking to be a really long-running New Memory Event (like the bullet when Aaron shot past-him, but stretched over a longer time), because I think in the original timeline, he probably did die in the plague and maybe Cole died at Cassie's, but now Cole lived through a paradox and Papa Cole died; Cole-Family bonding; and we saw the first meeting of Cole and Ramse and I'm not okay.
  • SO MUCH LOVE between Cole and Cassie. She tried to kidnap Jones to help him, she said more than once that she wouldn't let him die, she was willing to mess with history even though she doesn't want others doing that for her, she punched Aaron in the face for betraying them and ran back to Cole. She couldn't keep her hands off him, and spent the whole episode smoothing his hair, rubbing his chest, tucking him in, touching his face and I died. Oh my god, this ship sails itself. And then she held his hand at the end, and he looked at her like he had never held hands with anyone in his life and couldn't believe that this was happening now!
  • Aaron finally picking a side and being the force of human-level damage that we all knew he would be. He's maybe the worst of the baddies--he's bad because he can't think big enough to be good, can't grasp what's at stake. 
  • YoungJones! She's sassy and sharp and sardonic, and she doesn't believe in love until she weathers a night of crazy with Cole and Cassie, and she didn't want her baby but we know she eventually loves her so much she literally defies time to save her. I hope we get more of her in the now!
  • A paradox that was so cool it was worldchanging. Because of it, Cole is whole again, but he's cut off from 2043, which I'm taking to mean he's now part of 2015. Like, if he manages to erase his own time, he now belongs here, and he won't disappear. I'm sure there's going to be a time when he starts jumping again, or when other people start going through instead of him, or both, but I'm so happy that he gets to spend time with Cassie--that they can do this together instead of her doing the legwork and him busting skulls without her. I hope it's weeks of togetherness before he starts splintering again, so that when he leaves, it really does hurt.
This show has made me a pain-junkie. It's crazy how I crave the angst!

And now there's only one episode lefttttt!



Saturday - April 4

Outlander!

Let's talk about: How somehow my favorite genre of TV became People In The Wrong Time--Outlander, Sleepy Hollow, 12 Monkeys, Continuum, even Flash, so some extent.

And about how I forgot all the sex? I literally have no idea how, but there's a lot of sex that I'd forgotten about, and it's weird watching it with my mom and brother on either side of me. But it's also done so well, so pretty.

But mostly I missed the scenery and the accents and the whole thing of the show, and I'm super excited that we have it back!

Monday 3-23-15

Gotham: Rerunnnnn

Scorpion: 1x19 "Young Hearts Spark Fire"

Let's talk about: How Toby totally knows what's up with Walter and how Walter has no idea. This was a cute episode full of cuteness, and it both progressed Toby and Happy's relationship and offered the first real (teeny tiny) movement of Walter toward Paige--something more than longing looks when he thinks no one can see him. I'm pretty sure, though, that she basically thinks he either can't care, or won't care, and so she's holding herself back. She's smart enough to know that a relationship with an emotionally unavailable man is going to be disastrous, and she's also seen little in the way of actual declarations of intent. Though these last two or so eps have done better, I'm pretty sure she hasn't caught on yet.

Let's also talk about Sylvester! Sweet, scared Sylvester, who ran away from home young because his dad couldn't understand him, and who stepped up and saved the pilot this episode! He keeps getting the shittiest part of the cases, but he has done so well!


NCIS:LA: 6x18 "Fighting Shadows"

Lets talk about: Really, all I ever want to talk about on this show is Kensi and Deeks, and thankfully, we got lots of them today! Being cute at the park. Being scared but unified. Being sweet. Pulling together when they need to be together. And Hetty doing her best to protect them! Which, really, she should do since she basically is the one who made sure they got together.


Castle: 7x18 "At Close Range"

Let's talk about: Ryan! And how it took him so long to get a him-centric episode! Did you know he had a sister? I only barely remember anything about a brother-in-law, Ryan gets so little screentime to himself. And I'm SO GLAD that he got to be serious, and a good cop, and basically take the lead on this case. And I'm glad he's still alive, because the more behind-the-scenes stuff we get on underused characters, the more nervous I get!

*Disclosure: I watched this on Thursday, off the DVR because Monday and Tuesday are too busy.

Tuesday 3-24-15

The Flash: 1x16 "Rogue Time"

Let's talk about: How Barry is an idiot. Like, last episode was so great, and then this episode, he basically messes everything up while somehow managing to avoid the worst stuff that happened last time. I'm deliriously glad that Cisco doesn't have his heart out, but instead that reporter guy that I was just starting to like as a mentor for Iris got it. And Cisco got backstory and family-not-understanding and still had to cry and make unfair choices. So now Captain Cold knows who Barry is. I'm sure that's not at all going to cause a million problems.

Other things of note:

  • Central City has the worse mobsters ever
  • Cold delivers lines like he's in Dick Tracy
  • Even knowing the future can't help Barry be less of a twelve year old around girls
  • Cold has a sister with a gun that turns things into gold; why does he need to do crimes?


iZombie: 1x2 "Brother Can You Spare A Brain?"

Let's talk about: How much I love this show?? Like, every week, Liv gets to be a slightly different character, with slightly different skills, and they're teaching her how to get her life back. And also, they're hilarious. Liv describing things artistically, and being desperately sensual the whole episode, weirding out Babineax was so great. There was less of Ravi and Babs this ep, a little bit, to make space for Blaine, who is sort of awesome and sort of hateful and I'm not sure which way he's going to go in the long run, but it's sure to be crazy and bad for Liv.

Let's also talk about: How glad I am that her passes that she made on Major were rebuffed. He's been very good about her not telling him what's going on, but she doesn't get to jump him just because she's got a philandering artist in her mind. It's too much, and I'm glad he sent her home. It makes him more of an actual person, and it reminds her of everything that's wrong right now--and maybe helps her figure some stuff out, if we're lucky.

Agents of Shield: 2x14 "Love In The Time of Hydra"

Let's talk about: How vaguely uncomfortable this episode made me? Like, Coulson leaving Skye unattended and alone in isolation seems like overkill and a really bad idea--and I'm glad he said that it feels like that to him, too, because maybe that means that we've got a story-altering-context-shift coming up soon to make sense of some of this. Skye needs to be somewhere where people she trusts are--and more importantly, where no one else can get their hands on her. Also? She quakes stuff, but she hasn't really done more than break some windows and knock some stuff down so far, and everyone's acting like she's leveled a city. That might be a SFX issue; it hasn't looked as bad, to me, as everyone is acting like it is.

And the whole Ward / 33 thing? Creepy. And Other!Shield? So far, it seems like they're a bunch of hypocrites since they're all "we need transparancy" but we had no inkling that they existed until now and they're not answering any more questions than Coulson is. And really, neither is significantly different than OldShield that I've seen. If this drives Coulson into a looser, more active, more super-hero-y sort of Shield, that'd be cool since he has all the cool young agents, but then he's not really in Shield anymore. So I'm assuming the OtherShield will turn out to be, like, 10x worse than OldShield? I don't know. I can't tell where this is going. I thought it'd be one Shield for each side of Civil War, but unless the show is going to be way ahead of the movie timeline, making everything out of synch, I have no idea what this "lets get him now" stuff is about.

Forever: 1x18 "Dead Men Tell Long Tales"

Let's talk about: How Henry is both redeemed and effectively uncursed in this episode, and also an embodiment of the White Savior. Though I don't think that second part is what they were going for. And there's that reveal (or, at least, it's framed as a reveal) that only the weapon that killed you the first time can kill you now. Henry's flintlock is probably never going to be functional again--or, at least, reality says it shouldn't be--and he's enjoying his life enough now that I don't see him testing it, but he's been established to have a sort of suicidal tendency. He hasn't died needlessly since they came back from break, but who knows when that'll come back.

Let's also talk about: How Jo is being swept off her feet by a rich guy who is pushy enough to make her all shy and wide-eyed, and how that seems to...wash out some of her character? Like, it's not too bad now, but I wouldn't have forseen her being so easily swayed before I saw this ep, and it's annoying me a little. But look how proud Henry looked when they busted in on her and he found she'd taken her gun with her on this date with this man she hardly knows who was a suspect three minutes ago.

Disclosure: I watched this Thursday bc of overbooking on Tuesday nights.


NCIS: 12x18 "Status Update"

Let's talk about: Hell if I know. I didn't have a whole lot to say about this ep; I'm not terribly interested in their cases, I'm getting tired of stories about terrorists, and the interpersonal relationships have been mostly outward-focused on people outside the core team that aren't hardly on the show, so meh. I like that McGee and Delilah are reunited, but I don't feel like their problems were really solved--she's home, but she's got "more secrets" because of her higher security clearance now.

Disclosure: I also watched this one on Thursday.


Wednesday 3-25-15

Arrow: 3x17 "Suicidal Tendencies"

Let's talk about: How I'm so glad that the Ra's storyline was way in the background in this one, because I'm so done with it. It was a plot point this week--something to get Roy to believe that Ollie isn't a mass murderer, and I'm glad, for once, that they didn't drag it out. Because they've been dragging everything out. I don't like how everyone keeps dumping everything on Felicity, or how that whole mission they sent the Suicide Squad on was stupid, but I loved the Squad itself and the wedding and Ray realizing that he's in over his head and has some opinions wrong. They keep reaffirming his connecting to Felicity, though, and we already know that he's spinning off into the teamup show, so...is she going to be IT for every hero on two shows now? Or is it doomed to be breakup city when that show happens? Is he going to leave when she decides that it actually IS Ollie he'd rather be with?

Did you see Ollie just leave Roy unconscious on the ground so that he could walk away from Atom dramatically?


Thursday 3-26-15

Elementary: Reruuuuunnnnnn

Backstrom: 1x8 "Give Till It Hurts"

Let's talk about: How cute and competent everyone on his team is? I think my favorite scene was when everyone was just arriving at that swanky party and admiring how nice everyone else looks--and sort of flirting and pairing off. With Valentine moving in and shaking things up some. It's just piles of fun.

But the most important part, I think, in the whole episode, is seeing how charming Backstrom can be, which gives a little context to how he was ever married to Amy to begin with. Maybe he's in the depths of despair right now, going all House on the world, but at one point--a point she lets him get back to a little bit--he was nicer and more fun and likable a little. And then he messes it up.

And the second important part was that dream board. It's covered in food and booze, stuff he could get right now if he wanted, so those aren't dreams. What are his actual dreams? What doesn't he want to face and let people see? Does he even allow himself to have dreams?

This show is really growing on me.


Bones: 10x11 "The Psychic In the Soup"

Let's talk about: How this show has been off so long I totally forgot about looking up when it came back?? Thank goodness I follow All The TV People on Twitter!

This one came back with a punch in the feels with it  being Sweets's birthday--the first since he died. The show has floated a little toward the ineffable, and I like the idea that Christine's imaginary friend is Sweets still looking out for her, because really what I wanted most in the world before his death was for him to just join their family and stay there forever. I am sad that his last act on earth wasn't to talk to Daisy or his own baby, though; maybe that'll come back later, and we just didn't see that part. I'm also a little sad that Sweets sticks around but not Mr Nigel Murray. Maybe Avalon can find him, too.

I wonder when they're going to bring up that Bones is preggers again?


Friday 3-27-15

12 Monkeys: 1x11 "Shonin"



Let's talk about: How this show NEEDS an aftershow?? And how it's so close to the finale and I just know I'm going to be reeling for DAYS??

And how EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT NOW? I'm trying to be cautious as all hell, because I know they're gonna smack this cookie out of my hands and step on it, but the ending of this still feels like a reward for having stuck with them this far. It's like 3D puzzle pieces slotting into place and then all of a sudden you can turn the thing you're building and see this whole other side to it. And because of that new side, you can also see all these opportunities that were invisible before:

  • Cole now knows exactly who the Witness is, and therefor exactly what he told him--which means he knows also what he didn't tell him
  • And anyway, they're back even--Cole landed home with Cassie after Ramse left, so anything from this part on is New Ground
  • And New Ground means they can do things now that can't be preempted--at least as easily
  • And that means maybe they can actually have a chance of causing change
  • And that means maybe this isn't a closed loop of a show that will beat me up and end the way it started--maybe there is an actual chance, no matter how small, that things could alter and that the Mission wasn't all obsessive BS from the beginning
I'm just ???!!!! Like, I'm almost actually looking at my actual hands. I feel like I've been handed something wonderful, and I've only just grasped some of what that wonderful thing was. I feel like I just wrote this thing myself.

Now, there's still two episodes and any number of things could go wrong--
  • Ramse could still cause chaos and just do it, like, randomly now, making him potentially much more dangerous
  • Cole could bleed out on Cassie's floor
  • The Army could regroup or launch some new offensive
  • Aaron could weenie out and call in whatever deals he's made (now that he's where Cassie was two years ago when he thought she was crazy, and he's lost everything, and now Cole is back again)
  • Striking Olivia could have some new monstrosity up her sleeve (and almost definitely does)
But now, for the first time since maybe episode 3 or so, it feels like they can actually do something about it. Here's my pet ideas (I won't call them theories because this show is gleefully hard to figure out and always goes unexpected angles even when you do guess the broad strokes, but these are the things I'm hoping for):
  • Ramse doesn't know what happens between 2015 and 2017 because OlderCassie didn't tell Cole so he couldn't tell Ramse, so that's two whole years to effect change
  • Also, that's two whole years to convince Cassie that maintaining spoiler-safety across timehops is a bad idea that always gets someone killed, so that they can have more warning when they get there naturally, and Keep Her Alive
  • Because I'm convinced that the plan that results in them working together and Not Dying is the one that will Fix History--they've failed so far because they've been blocked, but also because they were coming at it in straight lines, one at a time, not together and not from odd angles
You guys, this show. This show is everything.





Saturday 3-28-15
SNL: 40x16 "Dwayne Johnson"

Let's talk about: That Indiana Jones skit! How did they get away with that?? Oh my god, I died! We're still talking about it on Monday, and I can't remember the last time that happened on SNL. The show is still funny, but it's sort of become this collection of weird slice of life things where there's not really a plotline or a punchline, just being being strange. But with The Rock? That worked a lot better than it has with some!


Sunday 3-29-15
The Walking Dead: 5x16 "Conquest"

Let's talk about: How this is the finale??? (this slot will eventually be filled by Hell on Wheels if they come back on the same days they left on, and maybe by the "companion series" Fear of the Walking Dead (which is a lame name), but STILL) I feel simultaneously like a lot has happened and like not much has happened at all--most of this half of the season has been psychological, which has been a new and more creepy sort of horror--and maybe that's why so many people died this year all in a row; they had to make up for how there weren't any cannibals or conquering Governors by having everyone dead.

 I'm still mad about Beth. And Tyreese. And Bob. And Noah. For different reasons, even, which is both impressive and annoying.

  • Beth was the gentle heart of the show, so I guess she had to go so they could all be filthy and depressed again, with no hope. But she humanized Daryl and he wanted her back so badly and then she died when he barely got to say hello-I-saved-you, and it wasn't even a noble death.
  • Tyreese had a very good death-episode, but he had the same problem--he was swearing off killing, he was gentle and caring, and so he was killed by the world, and it was bad.
  • Bob seems to have been man-fridged, and maybe Tyreese, too--they both were all Sasha had in the world, and now she's alone and crazy with her woman-pain making her act the way men do when their women are killed off.
  • And Noah! Beth died to save Noah, effectively, she got caught so that he could escape when she was almost free, too, and then he died because that other guy from Alexandria is a COWARD, and Glenn has seniority and people would riot if he died.
That's a lot of non-white dudes, too, which is alarming.

So here at the end of the season, I don't like the Alexandrians anymore, but I do like that they're finally listening to Rick when he says he knows what's what, and I'm looking forward to them building an actual strong community next season--you know, when the next outside threat comes along and ruins it for them.

I'm glad that Glenn is still good enough that he couldn't kill that guy, but he didn't really deserve that niceness.

And the other show: It looks like it's going to be in the city and that should be awesome--think of all the skyscrapers and warehouses and abandoned movie and tv lots and whatever else. There could be malls! Like, classic zombie-movie malls! It'll be a lot different than tromping around woods all the time, and the racial mix could, potentially be more diverse, too, so that should be cool. And the class mix--really awful super-rich dudes and really poor people and lots and lots of people in between. I'm bummed that the city isn't somewhere with a wildly different climate though--zombies drying out in the desert and being brittle and sharp, or freezing in the winter snows and melting out in spring would have been so cool.


The Talking Dead: 4x16 "Conquest"

Let's talk about: The last after show for ages! I hope they let Chris Hardwick host an after for Fear, or that he gets some other show in the meantime; I love this thing, where this one cute dude can put into words what we're all feeling about complex and sometimes upsetting shows. He's good at it, and he obviously loves it.

Really, I think that all high-budget or high-concept show should have an after-show. Like, even just a panel that literally only talks about what just happened--to weigh the morals, talk about the creative choices, make sense of the confusing parts, help us through the hard parts, celebrate the awesome stuff...how great would that be?
