Daredevil trailer!

I have yet to reach Marvel-saturation, as proved by how excited this teaser for a franchise I don't even really care about has made me.

See, the Daredevil movie was so dumb I don't think I've ever actually gotten through a whole run of it, and Elektra was so phenomenally bad that they still use it as proof that Ladies Can't Carry Superhero Films*, and even before all that I was just like "eh" about it. But maybe it's all about the visuals, and whatever magic-dust the MCU has, because this looks cool.
  • They cast a dude who looks good in a business suit AND a superhero suit
  • I like the black--makes him creepier and harder to see
  • It looks modern to me, which is good, because if he was back in the 70s, there'd be that whole why-are-people-surprised-now-about-superheroes-when-they've-existed-for-fourty-years thing; and this way, there's native heroes, right where the Battle of New York was--and where people would most likely be turning to vigilantism.
  • I wonder if we'll have any flashbacks to what these people were doing that day?
  • I wonder if the literal darkness of the show has as much to do with the way he's actually blind as it does with grimness?
  • I hope it's got some humor in it; one of the strengths of the MCU is that they can be really serious AND still be believably goofy. There should at least be dark gallows humor in this so it isn't oppressive, I think.
  • I love Netflix as a release option. So I can mainline it, yes, but also so it can't be messed with by networks full of people who don't get how tech is changing TV.
  • I'm excited to see how this show supports and expands what's happening in the movies--and to see how ideally smooth a series could run, when it doesn't have to have a weekly schedule to work around.**
  • And of course, there's the sheer fact of representation--Hawkeye hasn't said one way or another whether he's deaf like in the comics, but Daredevil has to be blind to work as a character.
This is just a teaser, of course, but it looks cool.

Whadda you guys think?

NOTES:
* That is a rant for a whole other post.
** If it's good, it'll  make me that much sadder for SHIELD--they were full-on hobbled by being weekly as the movies came out, the TV schedule changed, and now with this midseason Agent Carter, which I love, but which is keeping us from finding out what happened to Skye and co.Middle of a season is a weird place to put a whole other series, though if it works, and it ties in, and it comes out phenomenal for Phase Whatever-we're-in-now, then I'll call it brilliant.

Fantastic Four trailer

So! Let's see:

  • It looks super-serious, which is always sort of...hit or miss with comic book movies; I feel like to be taken seriously, there has to be a little bit of not-serious to contrast it against and to humanize the characters (as they turn not-human, etc).
  • It looks also like they're not going into space? I didn't see any space-vehicles, just pods and energy-explosions--which would be a good way to literally ground the story AND a good way to explain their villains.
  • No Doctor Doom? I'm okay with that, if it's true, since the old one had Doom and I'd want to separate my new movie from that old one if I were them.
  • Dark and sort of...CGI-ish.
  • I've heard rumors that reshoots were because it looked too much like Chronicle 2, and also because it was very cerebral and they felt it needed more action. Either of those could go either good or bad, so we'll see.
  • If this is, after all, in the same world as the XMen, it looks like it's current...which puts it 30 years ahead of the current XMen movies, which is...odd...but could work out with some really good, like, casting and maybe some background stuff--news casts about mutants doing something, headlines shown, stuff like that, without needing full-on crossover stuff.
  • I like that Johnny is black, but since Sue isn't, does that mean they aren't siblings anymore? Or is one of them adopted? I feel like them being sibs is a big part of the group dynamic, usually.
  • The Thing looks good.
  • The fire effects look good.
All in all, I'm not super-stoked, but I love the XMen movies, and this has something to do with them behind the scenes and hopefully in front, so that gives me hope. And it's definitely on my list to see, I just want more info before I get excited and stuff.

More questions I have about 12 Monkeys

Why is Cole so determined to not exist? The agreement, originally, was that he'd go back, kill a dude, change the future, and stop existing. Is he that against the world? Is he that full of self-hate? Is he sort of passively suicidal? Or is he running from something, and undoing the whole world is the only way to avoid it?

Does Ramse know that the agreement was that Cole would pop out of existence?

How much experience does Cole have with thing other than basic survival and violence? When will the relatively peaceful current world catch up to him and overwhelm him with all the stuff, the options, the personal connections, the emotions other than fear and anger? And what will that be like? Will Cassie be there to help him, or will it catch up to him at a really bad time?

If he's about to splinter and he grabs a person, will they come with him the way his clothes and that watch and weapons do? If so, what would it be like for someone who hasn't had the treatments he's had? Would it be worse than leaving them when he goes?

Is the machine the only one that was built? What was the original purpose? Did other people use it before these guys found it again?

These sorts of shows basically require a support network--but who can they turn to in any of the times we've been shown, who can help them and be trustworthy enough to know the truth? Will anyone set up a way to communicate back and forth through time? Will anyone set up, like, caches of stuff they can use no matter what time they're in?

Newest obsession - 12 Monkeys

This show is so addictive! I don't really remember the movie. I saw it once, like, when it first came out on DVD or not long after, and I haven't seen it since, so I know the basic idea, but I also know it's not really like this. And I'm glad of that, because a closed-loop two hour movie is not really much like a twelve-hour ongoing series anyway, structurally.

There has been all of two episodes (three after tonight!), and in two days I watched both of them twice, and didn't even live blog, I was so engrossed.

There's so many of the things I love in a show:
- Good, strong, complex characters that are being uncovered a little at a time
- Really good chemistry. Like, really good. Like, I was shipping hard after one episode.
- A complex, multilayered story full of twists and fun and mysteries
- Postapocalypse contrasted sharply with Preapocalypse in a way that feels sort of Terminator-at-it's-best (and I think some of the same people work on both, which is encouraging because TCC was good, and scary because it got cancelled). It also gives me Continuum vibes, which is also good because that show is great.
- Time travel! I love a time travel show, and this one is cool because a) Cole doesn't much give a shit about the fact that he's time traveling, he just has a job to do, b) he uses Time Traveler Tense like "keep track of that, it'll save out asses again two minutes ago" and I love it, c) it makes sense, and d) it is happening out of order! And best of all, the nonlinearity seems to be planned out, unlike a certain British children's show I adore but is sort of a mess.

And it basically feels like all the mysteries they're setting up have a purpose and a plan, and that they've worked up the whole plot ahead of time. I know that Lost and XFiles also felt like they had it sorted, but I'm sort of a sucker for that sort of plot anyway, and the fact that it's twelve episodes instead of 22 gives me hope, because there's way less space for filler and wheel spinning.

I love that SyFy seems to be course-correcting back to actual science fiction television, and that they're getting on the intentionally-good-tv-drama bus. I love that they're running with this crazy twice-adapted idea and making it something new again. I love that all the characters are interesting, strange, not entirely trustworthy, and all have goals. I love that everyone is being challenged in their goals, their beliefs, their status quo. I love the atmosphere and the pacing and the locations.

I'm so impressed.

And here's the questions I have so far:
- How long before Ramse goes evil, since Kirk Acevedo's characters tend to do that?
- How long before someone makes out with someone else, and how awesome or weird will it be?
- how long before Evil Leapers show up and start interfering?
- How long before Cole starts cracking up from the physical and mental strain of this job?
- How long before a timeline has to be totally remade / destroyed / altered in a way other than their original plan?
- How long before they start meeting the younger versions of the few survivors they know in the future?
- How long before Cassie jumps to the future for any reason at all?
- How long before it's revealed that Cassie becomes Jones and that Jones set it up to allow a second chance but she still loves Cole???

Have you guys watched it yet? What do you think of it? Let's discuss!

God I love NASA aka The Exoplanet Travel Poster Series - stuff I found on tumblr

Tumblr I've got to stop just email-blogging from Tumblr, but my app is being dumb and my iPad isn't saving pictures, so here's another one. And it's so good.

NASA, in their inestimable awesomeness, created a stunning set of vintage-inspired posters, the Exoplanet Travel Series, inviting people to explore Kepler-186f, HD 40307 g, and Kepler-16b, three exoplanets located in the potentially habitable Goldilocks zone of their respective systems.

A planet following this Goldilocks Principle is one that is neither too close nor too far from a star to rule out liquid water on its surface and thus life (as humans understand it) on the planet. However, planets within a habitable zone that are unlikely to host life (e.g., gas giants) may also be called Goldilocks planets. The best example of a Goldilocks planet is the Earth itself.

Although little is known about each of these planets, the posters give an idea of what life could potentially be like there based on some of their distinctive characteristics. For example, Kepler-16b is pitched as "Where your shadow always has company," because it orbits a pair of stars, potentially causing visitors to cast two shadows.

Click here to learn more about each of these exoplanets and download high-res versions of these inspiring posters.
