The epic Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Rewrite Pt1

I've made no secret that I've been having issues with Sleepy Hollow Season 2. Even though the episodes started off okay, and ended closer to how they should be, the sophomore slump hit this show hard, and there's just a lot that I can't let lie when I have the power to rewrite it, so here's my Better Than That version of the series.

The rules:

  • Keep the main plot points to prove that they can still have made this season, just better
  • Remove the most problematic, stupid, nonsensical, and pointless stuff and replace it with something that worked with the plot as established, was true to the characters, included all the characters, and kept the momentum up
  • Rearrange some of the points that were underserved so that they could become proper plot details and compelling story
  • Everything in season one stands as is, because while it wasn't perfect, in comparison, it was a shining example
So! Act I: Things are worse now...

This Is War

This episode was actually pretty great. We got an epic Ichabbie hug. We got a lot of awesome illusions. We got Jenny being a badass. We got good set up for the season.

So we're keeping:

  • The whole surprise-party / Archive / the Key / Henry being a bizarrely adorable captive surrounded by houseplants / it being an illusion thing
  • Ichabod getting himself out of the box, especially the part where he records a dying message for ABBIE, not for HIS WIFE
  • Jenny getting herself out of the Warehouse and Henry reading her sins to get what he needs, and every second of the Ichabod Drives An Ambulance thing
  • Katrina in the cabin stabbing Ol Headless and escaping was pretty cool, so we'll keep that
  • Most of the Purgatory scenes, because they were great: Andy Brooks helping her to remember he's human, the mirror-contact and the Epic Hug and so many shoulder and hand-grabs afterward, the double and the key and all of that
  • Getting the Key with Jenny, and Jenny hugging Ichabod and reminding him how to function in the underworld
What we're losing:
  • Shirtless Headless was the start of him not being an actual villain, and getting totally defanged, so we're ditching that mess
  • Katrina being IMMEDIATELY recaptured before she even escapes the room
  • Henry being gifted a fancy set of armor instead of being changed into War directly
  • Everything about Moloch being in focus, moving normally, and wearing clothes--naked, blurry, not-moving-like-a-human-at-all demon-kings are much scarier and less cheesy
What we're adding / changing:
  • Katrina gets out of that room, narrowly avoiding Headless, and hides out in the woods, where she tries to call on her powers and finds she's still weak--and that nature doesn't seem to like her much; things aren't just not responding to her, she's getting weird unnatural results; she's recaptured because she's sort of horrified and lets her guard down, not because she's an idiot who can't do anything. She gets the necklace after she's back inside, and it burns her or something so we know for sure it's bad news, not just letting her see his head--which only looks like his Abraham-head when he's making an effort, and looks like that gross old skull when he's angry, maintaining his villainy and scariness.
  • Henry is gifted the mantle, not an automaton, and it changes him physically--and Moloch actually gives him orders.
This way, we have a set up where K is not useless, Henry has a much more clear role as a tool without all the gross grovelling, and there's not that disconnect between him being gifted power in this episode and him being punished in the next for the same thing. Mostly, though, that return episode was something close to what we'd expected from the previous season, and it was great.

Kindred

This one was also not bad, but had some of the seeds of stuff that got out of hand later, so we'll do a little surgery, but also mostly leave it alone. The real work comes later in this season!

What we're keeping:

  • The Kindred, of course
  • The dream at the beginning, where Ichabod foresees the ritual of binding, and especially "you must be alike in every way"
  • The whole intro of Reyes was pretty great, how she was immediately on the wrong foot with Abbie, but also caring and considerate of the fact that she knew Mamma Mills, and later, how she thinks she knows that the town is having some sort of cartel problem.
    • And all those other cops! Look how Abbie knows them all, and they all have things to do!
  • Abbie and Ichabod finding and then scoping out the Willow Point Estate, and their various conversations about how they need to stay focused and Ichabod trying to jump the gun and Abbie stopping him
  • The argument in the cabin about whether it's worth the whole raising-a-monster thing, and Ichabod just loudly declaring that they will
  • The fight Katrina and Headless have about how Ichabod couldn't let Abbie stay in Purgatory more than a few hours, but let his wife stay for centuries, because that's some truth right there (though in his defense, he couldn't help her because she put him in stasis, so it's really sort of her fault), and "Moloch has a plan for us all"
  • Visiting Frank in jail and telling him to plead crazy by telling the truth--and him telling them where he hid the Head
  • All the bank scene, every second of it
  • Jenny getting caught with illegal weapons and getting sent to jail
  • The whole scene in the Tunnels, looking for the body and finding it with the booby traps, Abbie's flashbacks, them talking about what their greatest weaknesses are and whether they're actually weaknesses, all of it. That scene was beautiful.
  • The "I wanted it to be you, I just wasn't ready to marry anyone" line, because that was good stuff, even if it was a lie. It buys good time.
  • The battle with the Kindred against War and Death is pretty great--so we'll keep all that.
  • Katrina saying "this is not my world" and Headless saying "it won't last long"
  • I guess we can keep "still no sign of the Kindred"--and then later, have it show up when it's needed, because it's bound to Abbie since she said the words
  • Reyes visits Frank before Henry shows up, and looks a little sharply at Henry but doesn't listen to all the crazy from Frank; she does, however, make notes in his file

What we're losing:

  • That statement that the body is pre-enchanted so all they have to do is say the words

What we're adding / changing:

  • Katrina listens actually carefully instead of really obviously and poorly; Henry knows that I&A are coming, but it's said incidentally to Headless, not as a weird threat to Katrina
  • The Kindred ceremony doesn't work when Ichabod says the words, but the second time around, Abbie says them and they do work--setting up that she has magic in her somewhere, and that Ichabod can't do magic because he has conflicted loyalties and you have to have absolute will to make it work
  • They don't tie up Katrina, they block her into one room with magic, which she then starts to systematically dismantle, proving that she actually does have power and understand how magic works. More strange things happen, but she has to get out so she's motivated.
  • After Katrina says she wanted to marry Abraham, and it turns his head from a gross skull to a lovestruck human-head, she says that Ichabod was a mission, something that got out of hand, but she's seeing more clearly now.
  • Katrina wants to leave, but Headless is on his way back and she's still trapped; she chooses to stay because otherwise Ichabod will be caught--he doesn't make it all the way in there just to have her refuse him. It's a matter of snap decisions, not of her being a lame-o. He goes, and Katrina gets her barrier down just as Headless shows up and finds her free; she says she wants to help the battle since she enchanted the Kindred to begin with, but the battle is already over. The necklace changes her a little more.
  • When Abbie goes to see Jenny in jail, we'll keep Reyes and her mistrust of Ichabod, because that's great, but instead of Jenny just rolling over and taking it, we'll have Reyes revoke Abbie's guardianship, and give her a note on her record--and send Jenny back to Tarrytown because obviously she's still crazy and dangerous.
  • Frank gets his new lawyer, and it's Henry, and it matters that he was hired by Cynthia--but instead of Frank casually and accidentally signing over his soul, they're interrupted by a very angry Jenny being dragged back to her old cell, which they've been holding for her. Jenny and Frank make eye contact, and he doesn't sign anything; he says he's tired and he needs to look it over better later.
This way, we keep the core of the story, where they raise this monster that is the opposite of Death, and they ridiculously don't put it away again when they're done with it, and then we can use it later. We also keep the concerns Abbie has with Ichabod's loyalties, and we make a point of that time when he just overrides Abbie and Jenny and declares that they're going to do this whole Kindred thing. Meanwhile, we build on the idea that Katrina isn't all that she seems, and we give Jenny and Frank something to do when they're out of the picture, so that they aren't sidelined--they've got plot and purpose, and they're together, not rotting in separate cells while the plot continues to move on without them. Also, it stifles Henry a little, and removes a lot of Frank's passivity from this whole beginning of the season.

What're your thoughts on my construction of these first two episodes? I'll be doing two at a time periodically to get me through the break until I have my Season 3--because they totally got renewed! Whooo!

Fanmusic Friday - Brains!

In which I have all the Bucky Feels

*

Last night, since everything in the world is on reruns because Sports**, we watched The Winter Soldier for the evening's entertainment. And you know, I saw it in the theatre, but I haven't seen it since, and between the viewings I had like a year of Tumblr pointin out tragedies to me. So here's all the Feels I was getting:

Other than Bucky:
- Peggy! I forgot that she was old and sickly and forgetting that she was talking to Steve in the middle of talking to Steve! I read a fannon post somewhere that had the idea that Shield gave her something that looked like dimensia, because she knew too much, and that made me even sadder.

- Natasha! Like, how sad she looked when Fury died, and what that meant about how important he was to her. And that moment when she didn't think she deserved the effort Steve put into keeping her alive? Oh my god. I don't ship those two specifically because I love how they function as friends--how he believes in her and how she's always amazed by it. How he's so genuine he inspires her to be honest and honorable, and how she sort of gets protective of him. Glorious.

And then onto Bucky. Bucky is a big old ball of horror and confusion and tragedy.

Like, he must've thought that Steve failed to save him back in Cap1, and who knows how hurt he was when Hydra got him. Did they tell him it happened on purpose? That Cap didn't try hard enough?

And then in the movie--he's framed as the villain, but he's a straight up victim. He's kept young and alive, but whereas Steve was frozen the whole time and woke up effectively the same a he was when he went out, Bucky doesn't even know who he was. His very identity was taken from him along with his arm. It was bad enough in the beginning, but once he starts trying to remember, it get so much worse, because then he starts to know how much he's been manipulated, starts to become aware.

He's been an operative for fifty years, at least. How often did they wipe his memory, painfully, because he was startin to see how the world changed and he didn't? How often because he was starting to remember?

And that fight at the end--Steve refuse to fight him, and he's so confused he gets angry. Like, that's his purpose, his only reason for being, as far as he's concerned (it seems), and Steve, who he looks afraid to remember, refuses to participate because of who he was before. Because of something he's not allowed to know--something he's probably subconsciously holding onto but suppressing. And by that point, we know for sure that he's remembering, and he's so outraged, so horrified about all of it, that it's heartbreaking.

And then after! After, Hydra has fallen, Shield has fallen, he's gone AWOL, and what does he have? A bad history of extreme violence, a lot of lies, and a lot of questions. He has Steve, but he doesn't know that, and might be actively avoiding him.

It's a lot of Feels. I mean, I thought the Loki Feels took all the space in my heart, but apparently I have bottomless reserves of Feels.

And now, going into Civil War, and the idea that Steve will go looking or Bucky and might die (or thereabouts), and knowing that in the comics, sometimes Bucky is Cap... How will he deal with all this? Who will want him back under control and who can he go to for help staying free? Does he remember on his own? How much more horror can he hold?

Ugh, good job Marvel! Angstiest of all the angsts!

Con Report - Wizard World Comic Con Raleigh / NCCC 2015 (Saturday only because we're poor)

I need to grow bangs again, because all these selfies taken with my short arms make my forehead look HUGE.

But I digress.

I heard about this one maybe two weeks ago when my bestie sent me the link saying my very own Number One Future Husband David Tennant would be there--and it was in my city where almost no one ever goes--and it was two weeks away. I didn't think I'd get to go, but it miraculously lined up with my brother's payday and he bought us both tickets. And yesterday we went!
I was going to wear Doctor Who nails, but I waited too long (since I was babysitting) to mix up a bottle, so what I did instead was a different time-traveler:

Look how sparlkly that baby is! Whoo! Cole acts like he's tough, but in nailpolish form, he has a heart of holographic gold!

I brought a box of polishes that I totally forgot to get people to look at, but I think that's going to be my MO--I'll just always have polishes on me so if anyone is like "Ooh, I like your nailpolish!" I can be "hey, I made it myself, wanna see some?". Because, I mean, Cons are my target audience, so...

COOONNNNNN! As you can see, Doctors and Peggy Carters and Tardis Hats and piles of people. This is the first Wizard World Con in Raleigh, and I think we did pretty well proving that it's a good place to have them! I hope it comes back next year, because traveling makes it too hard for me and too expensive, and, of course, the whole world revolves around me.

But I digress.

It was busy, but I never felt crushed or overwhelmed--the perfect number of people to prove that it's a hit, but not so many that we start thinking maybe we need more of a bigger space. This pic (above) was taken while we were in line for the CW booth, which had this cute little spinner thing for promo, and I got...

A brain! It's one of those stress-ball things, and it's so cute. Also, that show is amazing. I don't have any pics of it, but we went to the Pilot showing, and I loved it. We watched it last night, too, and I also loved it on TV with the finished titles sequence. It's like Veronica Mars, if VM was less looking for her best friend Lily's killer and sleeping with Logan, and more a zombie with an existential crisis and adorable co-workers.*

This guy! Sean Anderson! His was the first artist's booth I saw, right past the CW booth, and I immediately fell in love with this (below) picture of Doctor Strange. LOOK AT THE PRETTY! I almost bought Psylock, but she had sort of a crotch-shot thing going on, and I almost got Nightcrawler, but he didn't seem like the main focus of his own picture, and I almost got Storm, but hers, though gorgeous, wasn't as colorful. But you know what? I'm totes gonna figure out how to get more of this guy's art.

Bro in line (in the red shirt) for various autographs and pictures. I really wanted to meet David Tennant, but his stuff was SO EXPENSIVE and I am SO POOR. But! On the way to the iZombie thing, I was headed over to the up-stairs--the only one headed up--and there's like this wave of sound, so I look around and I see DAVID TENNANT STANDING THREE FEET FROM ME!!!!

Well, not standing so much as being whisked away into the backstage stuff by like six bodyguards and handlers, but he was so close I had to get out of the way for them to get by. I don't know if he saw me, but I saw him, and he was so close! And so tall and pretty and bearded and grinning like a loon!

EEEK!

Best almost-thing ever.

Bro got tickets to meet Sean Astin and Soniqua Martin-Green, and I waited in line with him for a little while. I saw:

Did you know that Selina Kyle's dad is Venkman from the Ghostbusters? True Story.

Professor X! Or maybe an alternate-universe Cecil. Or maybe Actual Cecil, since I didn't hear him speak. I don't know. But if this guy is actually in a wheelchair, good job on a perfect costume!

As I said on Instagram, "I guess this is more of a vampire crowd than a werewolf one." Personally, I've only seen, like, two eps of either show, and I could only see Tyler Hoechlin because of the crowd around Ian Somerhalder, but lemme tell you, that Tyler? Way better looking when he's just a dude talking to fans. He could kill you with his smile. And he looks like he really, honestly wants to hear whatever they're saying.

That's how you Fame.

That shadow is Sean Astin! For realsies! He was, like, a foot away from where I was standing. The guy behind me kept peeking through the curtain but I was like, that curtain was there for a reason, and what if EVERYONE SAW ME??? So I took this moody pic instead.

Also, he totally walked right in front of us on the way to his table, and my Bro's brain fritzed out and we followed him across the whole of Artist's Alley before we lined up at his booth.

NBD, just Hermione hanging out with Marceline. Like ya do.

Rick and Daryl! These guys were good! They were posing all poster-like with people, and whoever they posed with held up whatever they were holding like it was a weapon, too. I saw a guy brandish an umbrella, and I think someone was using a backpack as a shield.

After iZombie, we stayed for Astin's panel. He started out by reading Terry Pratchett, since they were friends, and then he talked about various projects, and was awesome. Then when he got to the questions from the audience, about half the people lined up were kids or teens, and he was just as thorough and honest and thoughtful with "What's your favorite Disney character" as he was with "Which of your roles was the one that you just absolutely knew you had to have, that no one else could do better than you?"

Again, that's how you Fame.

Some shots of the center and the people.

It was Pi Day, the day we were there, so we brought mini-pies. I mean, geeky as that holiday is, there really should have been a booth set up that only sold Pie, but whatevs. We were prepared! We also got this huge tankard of home made rootbeer that was amazing. You buy the cup and then you get free refills for the rest of the day, and you can bring the cup back at any other time when they're set up, at any con or Rennfaire, and for five bucks you get free refills all day again! And it was AMAZING rootbeer. Thick and creamy and rich and sweet and all real sugar. So good. The black cherry soda tasted the way Marachino cherry juice smells, and nothing like cough syrup!

James Marsters! Of Buffy and Torchwood and a million less-good things! This pic was taken from, like, half a mile away, so it's blurry, but he still looks good and he's another one who really looks like he wants to hear what you're saying if you're there.

We went back to Artist's Alley after the panels. Bro bought all sorts of stuff--a signed print from one of the main artists on He-Man, a beautiful print of Doomsday, a few other prints I can't remember right now, some collectibles. I bought these three pictures above. There were so many more I COULD have gotten, too, and if I see these guys again, I'm so getting more. Like, srsly. I need a million posters.

Other art we saw that I couldn't afford and didn't take pictures of:
  • Three separate girls making GORGEOUS watercolors of, like, swirling princesses or beautiful monsters or amazing dragons
  • These really cool long narrow gold-leaf accented paintings of princesses and goddesses and mermaids
  • A whole table of travel and propaganda posters for nerdy things like Starfleet and various alien planets
  • Several tables of local Etsy shops with awesome necklaces and little purses and earrings and stuff (and no nail polish, whoo!)
I need to take at least a hundred dollars in spending money next time. 40 got me 4 posters that I love, and lots and lots of decision making that broke my heart!

#ConLife

Four and a Tin Dog! And he actually moved and stuff, it was great. Makes me want my very own K9 all over again.

A Jedi and a Sith out together!

We closed out the night going to see the local premier of WolfCop, which I don't have a picture of, either, because my phone AND my ipod died. But it was funny and dark and ridiculous and bloody and gratuitous and remarkably charming and affecting. I really, really liked it!

We were only there one day and it was this awesome; next year, if it comes back, we'll be there for the full weekend, with more money and maybe with more people (mom wants to go, and dad was sad he couldn't go meet Elvira. We got him a signed autograph, and got mom a teeshirt for Quantum Leap, since they didn't have Magnum, and Scott Bakula is her Number Two Favorite Dude.) And maybe next year I'll go in costume! I think, being short and round, Amethyst from Steven Universe is an ideal character to play. I just need purple clothes and a floofy purple wig and a big crystal to stick to my chest.

Bro is going to Wizard World Chicago this fall, but that's a dudely reunion thing, so I won't be there. Also, I can't afford that. But he said he'd get me autographs, and Nathan Fillion is going to be there, so I'm going to see if I can afford that. I want to go to more Cons! I need to see when the local and semi-local ones are, and where the people I like are going to be, and see if I can get another one in this year, somehow.

And one day, I'll have a table of my own at one!

NOTES:
*I'm trying to decide, already, who I ship her with. The ME who wants to cure her? The sassy cop who wants to develop a bit? Her ex, who is adorable but also totally normal? ALL OF THE ABOVE?

After tonight's episode, my ideal Agents of SHIELD roster

This week's episode was bonkers, especially in those last few minutes with that Big Reveal! I'm thinking, basically, that Shield 1 / Coulson and co will be on one side of Civil War with probably Cap, and Shield 2 will be on the other with probably Tony (and Maria, if she's still working for him). But if there's any fairness in the MCU, eventually they'll have to unite--and probably form Sword, once all those space baddies come back. So, assuming everyone lives, here's the team I want.

Coulson, of course
May
Fitz and Simmons, reunited and more unstoppable than ever
Cap
Widow and Hawkeye
A miraculously revived Tripp
Agent 33
The brain of Howard Stark in a robot body
A Banshee analogue
Pepper (because Tony pissed her off)
Maria (because Tony pissed her off)
Falcon
Jane Foster, Darcy and Selvig
Betty from the Hulk movies

And a deep-in-the-Inhumans connection with Skye, who I think is gonna turn out to be royalty, but still thinks of herself as Shield.

Subject to change as I see how cool all these new guys are vs how shitty I fear they might be.

Who would you build the new team around?
